Abstract: In this presentation, work performed in the Image and Video Processing Laboratory will be described.
The work addresses problems in the intersection of Signal Processing, Communications, Computer Vision and Life Sciences. Such problems range from audio-visual speech processing to abnormal event detection and video transmission. Special attention will be paid to the problem of image and video recovery. There is a plethora of applications in which information is lost due to acquisition, processing, or transmission, such as, astronomical imaging, commercial and entertainment photography, medical imaging, and molecular and cellular bio-imaging. A recovery problem is then required to be solved, according to which an estimate of the original scene is obtained based on the observed data and prior knowledge about the original image and the degradation process. Examples of such problems include image and video restoration, super-resolution, the removal of compression and transmission artifacts, compressive sensing, light field estimation in computational photography and fusion of EEG and fMRI data. We describe some of the recent advances and outstanding challenges in image recovery utilizing a Bayesian framework.
BIO Prof. Katsaggelos received the Diploma degree in electrical and mechanical engineering from the Aristotelian University of Thessaloniki, Greece, in 1979 and the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees both in electrical engineering from GA Tech, in 1981 and 1985, respectively. He has published extensively and is the co-inventor of 16 patents. He has served the IEEE and other Professional Societies in many capacities; he was, for example, Editor-in-Chief of the IEEE Signal Processing Magazine and a member of the Board of Governors of the IEEE Signal Processing Society. He is a Fellow of the IEEE and SPIE, and recipient of the IEEE Third Millennium Medal, the IEEE Signal Processing Society Meritorious Service Award, an IEEE Signal Processing Society Best Paper Award, an IEEE ICME Paper Award, an IEEE ICIP Paper Award and an ISPA paper award. He was a Distinguished Lecturer of the IEEE Signal Processing Society.
