Reduced Course Load Form PDF Download

Instructions for Students:

The Reduced Course Load Form is used for academic reasons in two different situations, in either your final or your first quarter of enrollment here at Northwestern. An overview of these and other situations are located on the International Office’s website.

For Final Quarter Enrollment:

Students who need to complete only one (1) or two (2) courses to complete their degree requirements are eligible to apply for a Reduced Course Load. To apply, download and fill out the Reduced Course Load Form, and bring it to the Student Affairs Office in L351. Staff will review your academic record to ensure you are compliant with degree requirements as outlined in the Graduate Study Manual, and obtain approval from the Director of Graduate Studies and your advisor, including signatures. You will then be notified to pick up the form, where you can then take it to the International Office during their walk-in hours (Monday-Thursday, 10 AM – 1 PM, 2 – 4 PM). Once you have turned it in, please email Student Affairs Staff so we can note it in your file.

**IMPORTANT**: The quarter in which the Reduced Course Load is granted must also be your last quarter on campus. If you are expecting to complete a project or thesis-based MS, but still only require 1 or 2 credits to complete your degree requirements, you may be required to enroll in a 590 Research course to maintain full-time status. Please come see staff in the Student Affairs Office (Tech L351) to discuss your situation.

For First Quarter Enrollment:

Students who are having language difficulties or trouble with adjusting to the university quarter schedule are eligible to apply for a Reduced Course Load. To apply, first discuss the difficulty issues you are having with your department academic advisor. After, arrange a meeting with Professor Allen Taflove, the Director of Graduate Studies, or Professor Goce Trajcevski, the Assistant Chairman to discuss further. From there, if there is unanimous approval, you can fill out the Reduced Course Load Form, and bring it to the Student Affairs Office in L351. We will obtain the necessary approval and signatures and notify you to pick up the form, where you can then take it to the International Office during their walk-in hours (Monday-Thursday, 10 AM – 1 PM, 2 – 4 PM). Once you have turned it in, please email Student Affairs Staff so we can note it in your file.

For Other Reasons as Outlined on the International Office’s website:

Students who are doing concurrent enrollment or need accommodations for medical reasons are eligible to apply for a Reduced Course Load. If needing to apply for these or other reasons, please see Student Affairs Staff in L351, or send an email so we can assist further.

If you have any specific questions about the processes outlined, or would like to discuss your situation further, please see Student Affairs Staff in L351 or email us for more info.
