Opening Ceremony

The International Federation of Automatic Control (IFAC) World Congress opens at 1630, Sunday June 30 1996 at the San Francisco Marriott Hotel with a gala Opening Ceremony. Opening remarks will be made by Dr. Harold W. Sorenson, IFAC Congress General Chairman, and Senior VP of the MITRE Corporation, Bedford, MA. Professor Stephen Kahne, President of IFAC and Chancellor of Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Prescott AZ will briefly describe the history of IFAC and present the Federation's two highest awards for technical excellence, the Georgio Quazza Medal and the Nathaniel B. Nichols Medal. In addition to the two award winners, Dr. Nichols will be present for this presentation. Chairman of the Congress International Program Committee, Dr. Jose B. Cruz, Jr., Dean of Engineering at the Ohio State University will describe the technical program of this Congress consisting of some 1500 technical presentations. The Keynote Speaker will be Dr. John B. Slaughter, President of Occidental College, Pasadena, CA. Dr. Slaughter is a distinguished control engineer, a former Director of the (US) National Science Foundation, and former Chancellor of the University of Maryland. He is a member of several corporate boards including IBM. Festive American music will be part of this opening of IFAC's 13th World Congress, only the second to be held in the United States during the 39 year history of IFAC. Approximately 2000 people are expected at the Opening Ceremony.
